LOS ANGELES—Noting that one’s own life often provided the best material, Whalefall novelist and screenwriter Daniel Kraus revealed Tuesday that the story was inspired by the time he ate a scuba diver. “My best writing usually comes from a personal place, and Whalefall is no different,” said Kraus, who quoted the adage “Write what you know” and explained that, in his case, that meant an incident that took place “somewhere in Florida” in the early ’90s. “As soon as I had my first taste, I thought, ‘That’s a movie.’ Naturally, I changed some details to make the story more dramatic. For example, instead of me, it’s a 60-ton sperm whale, and in my case, of course, the guy didn’t survive. But the core of the story is still the same. Both guys spent a lot of the time screaming.” At press time, Kraus announced his next project would be about a whale who killed a teenager with his car.
