In 2004, Jack White convinced country icon Loretta Lynn to come out of retirement and cut a new album for the first time in over a decade. The result was 2004’s acclaimed, Grammy-winning Van Lear Rose, which White himself produced. Cut to 2021, and the album was sadly and mysteriously pulled from streaming services. Luckily, White’s Third Man Records is righting that wrong, as the label has announced that the record will return to DSPs on November 13th.
Of course, given that it’s Third Man Records, the digital return of Van Lear Rose also comes accompanied by a physical repress. Remastered from the original analog tapes, the project will be available on CD, black vinyl, and limited-edition vinyl. Pre-orders are ongoing.
Re-release and Tour
“It is an incredible honor to work again with Jack White and his amazing team at Third Man to re-release this incredible album,” Loretta Lynn’s daughter Patsy Russell said in a statement. “Our mother’s spirit lives on through this timeless music, and we are thrilled that fans old and new will be reminded of this great work.”
The new version of the album will also include the rarity “Just to Have You Back,” a cut that was previously only available on Third Man’s vault version of Van Lear Rose. Also available today is the single “Miss Being Mrs.”
Background and Accolades
Before White and Lynn joined forces, Lynn’s last full-length solo effort was 1988’s Who Was That Stranger. Upon release, Van Lear Rose garnered rave reviews and took home two Grammys: Best Country Album and Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for “Portland, Oregon.”
In other Jack White repress news, Third Man Records also recently announced a 20th-anniversary edition of The Raconteurs’ debut album, Broken Boy Soldiers. White is also currently on tour in support of his latest album, Frozen Charlotte.
Van Lear Rose Artwork and Tracklist
The album artwork for Van Lear Rose has been released, featuring a portrait of Loretta Lynn. The tracklist for the album includes 14 tracks, including the singles “Portland Oregon” and “Miss Being Mrs.”
In conclusion, the re-release of Van Lear Rose is a welcome announcement for fans of Loretta Lynn and Jack White. With its return to streaming services and physical repress, this acclaimed album will once again be available for listeners to enjoy. Third Man Records has done a great service in making this music available once more, and fans will undoubtedly be thrilled to revisit this classic album.
