The Girls still aren’t done growing up. HBO announced Tuesday that Lena Dunham’s generation-defining comedy series will be returning for a five-episode limited run, with production set to start in 2027, ten years after the show’s original conclusion. The returning cast will include Dunham as Hannah, Allison Williams as Marnie, Jemima Kirke as Jessa, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna, and Andrew Rannells as Elijah.
Notably not returning is Jenni Konner, who was co-showrunner of the series during its original run but is not listed in the official release. (The reason for that might be found in Dunham’s recent memoir Famesick, which painted a toxic picture of their working relationship.)
Said Lena Dunham in a statement:
“We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell. I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day. Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it’s pretty hard to get them to stop… It’s rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding. I love these girls (and boy), our friends at HBO, and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us afresh why we do this, which is the joy of being together… and the chance to wear yellow mesh…”
Related Projects
The original six seasons of Girls are currently streaming on HBO Max, and are also available on DVD via Amazon. Girls isn’t the only Dunham project on the horizon — she and Carly Rae Jepsen have been collaborating on a musical adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You, which also begins its Broadway run in 2027.
With the return of Girls and the upcoming musical adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You, Lena Dunham is set to make a big impact on the entertainment scene in 2027. Fans of the show are eagerly awaiting the new episodes and the chance to see their favorite characters back on screen. As Dunham said, it’s a rare opportunity to return to something that changed her life, and she is grateful for the chance to revisit the world of Girls with a new level of gratitude and understanding.
