Kelly Clarkson Backs AI But Wants Separate Artist Charts

Kelly Clarkson Backs AI But Wants Separate Artist Charts

Kelly Clarkson shared her take on AI in music during a recent appearance on Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang’s Las Culturistas podcast, saying that while she supports using it creatively, AI artists shouldn’t compete on the same chart as human musicians.

“Here’s the thing. I love AI,” Clarkson said to begin the “I Don’t Think So Honey” segment. “There are very amazing things with AI that I am obsessed with, and I’m very into it artistically, too. I have fun with it just like everybody else does. But when you see AI artists competing on a chart with humans, I have an issue. I think there should be a separate chart.”

Clarkson’s Stance on AI in Music

She continued, “I think it’s welcome to the table. I think it’s really cool and creative what we’re going to create with AI. Musically, people that maybe can’t do certain things will be able to do it now. I think it’s a fun field to play in, but I don’t think that they should be competing with humans. It’s basically like having the Olympics, and then you’re having robots compete with humans, like who’s going to throw further? … What we’re going to do with it is going to be fun, but I do not think they should be competing.”

Clarkson expanded on her take, saying that AI isn’t going away and praising its contribution to science. “I think that you have to be able to differentiate between — we can’t lose human. You can’t lose what that is… There can be an appetite for both is what I’m saying.”

Other Artists’ Views on AI

Empire of the Sun’s Luke Steele recently gave a similar opinion about the inevitability of AI, calling it “just another tool” that artists should “embrace.” However, he cautioned that AI could “come and swallow you like a boogie monster at night.”

Boy George has embraced using ChatGPT to write multiple albums, while Jack Antonoff blasted songwriters who attempt to use AI to “optimize” songwriting as “godless whores” and Grimes warned that AI is the “most dangerous thing that’s ever going to happen.”

AI Artists on the Charts

Billboard currently doesn’t ban AI artists from its charts. In September 2025, Xania Monet became the first AI act to enter the Billboard charts and subsequently signed a $3 million record deal.

In conclusion, Kelly Clarkson’s comments on AI in music highlight the ongoing debate about the role of artificial intelligence in the industry. While some artists, like Boy George, are embracing AI as a creative tool, others, like Jack Antonoff and Grimes, are more cautious about its potential impact. As the use of AI in music continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the industry responds to these concerns and whether separate charts for AI artists become a reality.
