Smashing Pumpkins Bring High Energy to Chicago Concert

Smashing Pumpkins Bring High Energy to Chicago Concert

Smashing Pumpkins stopped by the United Center for a homecoming show in Chicago, and while there wasn’t much in the way of surprises or special guests, the gang still managed to do justice to the city and Mellon Collie. Corgan’s voice remains nasal and iconic, the playing was expectedly proficient, and a vast majority of the songs are tried and true. Both on paper and on stage, the foundation for the show they put together is simply rock solid.

The Smashing Pumpkins are currently on their “Rats in a Cage Tour,” which features a full set of Mellon Collie cuts and a second set of fan favorites and rarities. The tour is a celebration of the 30th anniversary of their iconic album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Chicago received the Pumpkins with open arms, and throughout the marathon, 30-song split set, the audience turned into a roaring chorus, loudly singing along with nearly all of the Mellon Collie tunes.

Setlist and Performance

The setlist for the show included a wide range of songs, from classic hits like “Today” and “Cherub Rock” to deeper cuts like “Sojourner” and “Jesus Is the Sun”. The audience was enthusiastic throughout the performance, with many fans singing along to every word. The Smashing Pumpkins also included an extended drum solo during the closer “Superchrist”, which had the crowd hooting and hollering.

Despite the energy of the performance, the crowd’s enthusiasm was somewhat limited by the fact that the floor was entirely seated. While this decision makes sense given the Smashing Pumpkins‘ demographic and current position as iconic Gen X rockers, it did dampen the communal experience of the show. The seated arrangement limited the audience’s ability to move around and engage with the music in a more dynamic way.

In conclusion, the Smashing Pumpkins‘ show at the United Center in Chicago was a resounding success, with the band delivering a high-energy performance that showcased their iconic sound and enduring popularity. While the seated arrangement of the floor may have limited the crowd’s enthusiasm, the Pumpkins still managed to get the audience on their feet and singing along to their favorite songs. With their “Rats in a Cage Tour” continuing throughout the fall, fans of the band won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to see them live and experience their unique blend of alternative rock and grunge music.
