Donnie Darko Hits Theaters Again in 4K for 25th Anniversary

The surreal sci-fi movie Donnie Darko, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, returns to theaters from October 2nd-4th with a brand-new 4K restoration, perfect for the movie’s widest theatrical release to date. Writer/director Richard Kelly blew our minds in 2001 with Donnie Darko, and Fathom is bringing us back in time again. The date of October 2nd isn’t a coincidence, as it’s commonly known as “Donnie Darko Day,” the day the film’s strange series of events begin.

The Movie’s Plot and Cast

Donnie Darko doesn’t get along with his family, teachers or classmates, but he finds a kindred spirit in Gretchen and guidance from a compassionate psychiatrist who believes hypnosis may unlock hidden truths. Meanwhile, Donnie is haunted by Frank, a mysterious giant bunny only he can see. When a jet engine crashes into his bedroom and narrowly misses him, Donnie is drawn into a series of increasingly strange events that seem governed by forces beyond explanation.

Rerelease and Exclusive Introduction

In addition to Jake Gyllenhaal, the movie stars Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Noah Wyle, Patrick Swayze, and Seth Rogen. The rerelease will feature Richard Kelly giving an exclusive introduction to audiences, discussing the movie’s enduring legacy since its original premiere. As Fathom Entertainment Vice President of Marketing Shannah Miller says in a statement, “This was not a film that exploded overnight – it found its audience slowly, and then never let go.”
