Caroline Rose Unveils New Album And Single Chow Mein

Caroline Rose has announced a new album, Gentling the Horse at the Walt Whitman Mall, out October 23rd via their newly launched label, SUCK records. For its latest preview, the singer and instrumentalist has shared a new single titled “Chow Mein” as they gear up to hit the road with Modest Mouse next month. Stream it below.

Album Details

Produced with John Congleton, the new album finds Caroline Rose pushing their knack for identifying the surreal within ordinary American life into increasingly strange territory. Its memoiristic songwriting is paired with expansive guitar textures, touches of surf-rock, spaghetti Western flourishes, and a darker current of suburban unease.

New Single

That sensibility carries into the quirky “Chow Mein,” which turns an awkward night out into a collision of menace and slapstick with lyrics like, “A bouncer at the door/ He asks for the password/ I’m already drunk cause I / Can’t afford a cocktail/ I pause before I throw up all over his tailored suit.”

Artist Statement

“I relate to characters who are a little strange, who are outsiders, who seem to fuck up a lot or find themselves in awkward situations,” Caroline Rose explained about their latest release. “Most of these stories are just pulled directly from scenes in my own life, so the character is basically always some version of myself. This is a story about trying too hard to be cool and act normal, but everything is going wrong.”

Upcoming Tour

Chow Mein” follows the previously released “Yip Yip Yow,” which went live in May and will also appear on Caroline Rose’s seventh studio album. Pre-orders for Gentling the Horse at the Walt Whitman Mall are now live.
