My Morning Jacket And Modest Mouse Cover Neil Young Classics

The latest singles from the next volumes of a Neil Young tribute album have been released with My Morning Jacket’s take on “Like a Hurricane” and Modest Mouse’s rendition of “Barstool Blues” being unveiled. Stream them below.

The covers will be featured on Heart of Gold: The Songs of Neil Young: Vol. 2: Out of the Blue and Vol. 3: Into the Black, which are scheduled for release on November 6th. Proceeds will go to The Bridge School, an institution founded by Neil Young and former wife Pegi, which helps children with complex communication and physical disabilities.

Tracklist and Artist Lineup

My Morning Jacket’s take on “Like a Hurricane” was recorded with Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The version works its way towards a crescendo, homed in on singer Jim James’ distinct voice, that bursts into an explosion of horns from New Orleans jazz icons. The song was recorded live in the Crescent City. Listen here.

“We were so honored to get to be at several of the Bridge School Benefit concerts in the past, and are so honored to once again be a part of raising funds for this amazing school, with these amazing songs of Neil Young,” James said in a press release. “We felt like teaming up with Preservation Hall Jazz Band would add some magic to this track, so we all got together with producer Ross Hogarth down in New Orleans and recorded it live at Marigny Studios.”

Modest Mouse joined forces with Califone for the cover of “Barstool Blues.” The new recording has hallmarks of the Pacific Northwest indie band imbued with Krautrock.

“I had initially chosen and started working on a cover of ‘Cortez the Killer’ before I realized that, in order to pull this off the way I’d like to, it was going to take me a thousand hours,” Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock said in a statement. “Then it struck me: there is a song that I like just as much and find personally more relatable, ‘Barstool Blues.’ This was a song I could really sing my teeth into.”

The new volumes, which are being released by Cinema Music Group and Killphonic Records, will feature covers by King Princess, LP, Draco Rosa, Lucinda Williams, MJ Lenderman, Ann Wilson, Peter Frampton, Cold War Kids, Los Lobos, Ben Gibbard, Kurt Vile and The Violators, Edie Brickell, and more.
