Weezer Rocks Fallon with Rare Song Performance

Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo took cues from New York City street performers when the band stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, August 19th, painting his skin to match an all-gold outfit. He went through the extra effort to support their upcoming The Gold Album, out this Friday.

During the appearance, Weezer performed the catchy lead single, “We Might as Well Be Strangers,” with Silversun Pickups bassist Nikki Monninger seamlessly filling in for Wednesday’s Karly Hartzman as the guest vocalist. Watch a replay below.

The Gold Album and Upcoming Tour

Staying on theme, Monninger wore a gold dress, while Weezer guitarist Brian Bell played a sparkly golden axe. Drummer Patrick Wilson’s kit and Scott Shriner’s bass had flourishes of golden yellow as well.

Cuomo and Wilson also sat down for an interview with Jimmy Fallon, who somehow did not acknowledge Cuomo’s golden look. During the segment, the artists discussed their early music careers, including a group named 60 Wrong Sausages and Weezer’s first gig with Keanu ReevesDogstar.

Fallon then asked whether Weezer’s upcoming tour, “Weezer: The Gathering,” was named after the popular tabletop card game Magic: The Gathering.

“I think Magic: The Gathering has something to do with summoning sorcerers from all corners of the world, and I think this tour is something like that,” Cuomo said before admitting he has never played. “We’re summoning all the different kinds of Weezer fans from around the world to come rock out with us.”

Creating The Gold Album

Cuomo also spoke of the importance of Weezer getting together in a room to make The Gold Album: “I think what you hear on the record is something that could only be created by humans coming together and being vulnerable and creating something together. It just can’t be created by AI or somebody on their own working on a computer or something.”

Weezer’s tour, “Weezer: The Gathering,” kicks off a North American leg with The Shins and Silversun Pickups in early September, followed by shows in Japan, Ireland, the UK, and Europe in early 2027. In conclusion, Weezer’s appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon was a unique and memorable one, with the band’s lead singer Rivers Cuomo going all out to support their upcoming The Gold Album. With their tour, “Weezer: The Gathering,” on the horizon, fans can expect an exciting and energetic performance from the band.
