DIIV have unveiled the second preview from their upcoming album, ZIRP!, set to release on October 30th via Fantasy Recordings. Stream “Kid” below.
The new single is accompanied by a music video directed by Jaxon Whittington, although it was filmed by frontman Zachary Cole Smith’s son Roy and his friend Julian. The flimsy camerawork takes viewers through what appears to be a professional music video shoot as seen through the eyes of a child.
Production and Concept
ZIRP! was produced by A. G. Cook, who was approached by the Brooklyn outfit to radically reconstruct their demos. He instead became more interested in capturing their live sound, ultimately scrapping the original plan.
“I became a bit obsessed with their live sound, and insisted on recording live drums before most of the songs were even finished,” he explained in a statement. “We spent a lot of time recording intricate guitar parts with specific guitar pedals, and as little time as possible doing anything on a computer, at least by my standards.”
He added, “After a few rounds of that, ZIRP! emerged as a concept, and a sort of utopian, dystopian mantra. For me it became a vehicle to push the band into new territory.”
Upcoming Album and Tour
“Kid” follows “The Fountain,” which DIIV released last month. Both songs will be featured on ZIRP!, which takes its title from the zero interest rate policies that the band links to a world of failed startups that has turned people into atomized “users.” The 11-track project follows their 2024 album, Frog in Boiling Water.
In support of their fifth studio record, DIIV will join Interpol for a run of North American dates in October. They are also set to appear at Balaclava Fest, Psyched! Fest, Sonic City Festival, and the Paris and London editions of Pitchfork Music Festival.
The full schedule includes dates in São Paulo, Brooklyn, Buffalo, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit, Columbus, Chicago, Chesterfield, Atlanta, Nashville, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Paris, Kortrijk, and London. Fans can find deals and get tickets to sold-out shows, with a promo code CONSEQUENCE20 available for $20 off their first order of $200 or more.
Tracklist and Artwork
The ZIRP! tracklist features 11 songs, including “The Fountain,” “Kid,” “When The Glow Came For Us,” “Dare Me,” “The Crash,” “Trillions,” “Us Against You,” “Evangelizer,” “Underground,” “My Star,” and “Idiot In The Sky.” The album artwork is also available to view.
In conclusion, DIIV’s upcoming album ZIRP! is set to release on October 30th, with a new single and music video for “Kid” available now. The band will embark on a tour with Interpol and appear at various festivals in support of their fifth studio record. Fans can find tickets and deals, and view the album artwork and tracklist online.
