L7 are heading out for one last run. The veteran punk rockers will launch their final world tour, “The Last Hurrah Tour,” on October 6th in San Diego, and ahead of the trek, they’ve unearthed a new song, “Loma Linda.”
The track dates back more than two decades. An early version was recorded in 2003 while Janis Tanaka was playing bass in L7, but remained unfinished until the band recently returned to the song and completed its lyrics, vocals, and additional instrumentation. “Loma Linda” is built around a steady, lumbering groove, and plays like an abstract Southern California travelogue, name-checking Loma Linda, Chula Vista, San Jacinto, and Rancho Cucamonga along the way. The song is available for free as a download through L7’s website for its first week before arriving across streaming services.
L7’s New Song and Tour
Its release also marks Tanaka’s return to the band following the death of longtime bassist Jennifer Finch from brain cancer in July at age 59. Finch had given L7 her blessing to continue with the planned farewell tour before her death, with Tanaka stepping back into the lineup. The latter previously played with L7 from 1999 through 2001.
“This new single marks the return of Janis Tanaka being back in L7 on bass after the sadness of losing Jennifer Finch a couple of months ago,” Donita Sparks said in a statement. “I was searching the band’s archives and came across this unfinished track from when Janis was in the band. It still sounded rather fresh and very L7 so we recorded new vocals with new lyrics and some other additional tracks and cranked it out in a couple of days ahead of this upcoming tour.”
L7’s Final Tour Dates
“The Last Hurrah Tour” begins with two nights at San Diego’s Casbah before moving through Phoenix, Austin, New York, Toronto, Chicago, Denver, Seattle, and other cities. The North American leg concludes November 14th at The Wiltern in Los Angeles.
Finch’s story will also continue in print, with her posthumous memoir Shooting Up and Making Out: A Memoir of My Life in LA and L7 due out in January.
L7’s final tour will be a celebration of their legacy and a chance for fans to say goodbye. With the release of “Loma Linda” and the upcoming tour, L7 is proving that even after all these years, they still have a lot to offer. The band’s dedication to their music and their fans is evident in their decision to continue with the tour, and their new song is a testament to their enduring spirit. As L7 takes the stage for the last time, they will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on their fans and cement their place in the punk rock hall of fame.
