Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Christa Pike, a 50-year-old woman on death row, survived not one, but two doses of pentobarbital during her attempted execution on September 30. I mean, you can’t make this stuff up. According to her attorney, Randy Spivey, the execution team had a tough time establishing working IV lines in her arms, going through about 10 needles and trying several sites on both arms. They even struggled to push saline through the last IV site they established. Bless their hearts, it sounds like they were having a rough day.
The whole ordeal is just shocking, and I’m not sure what’s more surprising, the fact that she survived two doses of pentobarbital or the fact that the execution team had such a hard time getting the IV lines in. I mean, it’s not like they’re trying to start an IV on a squirming kid or something. Pike was hospitalized after the failed execution and was even on a ventilator for several days. Her attorneys didn’t think she was going to make it, but she ultimately regained consciousness and returned to prison after being discharged.
Now, the failed execution has brought renewed scrutiny to how Tennessee carries out death sentences. State protocol calls for a second dose of pentobarbital if the first doesn’t result in death, but it doesn’t spell out what to do if a person survives the second injection. I guess that’s not something they thought would ever happen. Somewhere in Nashville, a prosecutor is probably thinking, “Well, back to the drawing board.” Pike was 18 when she tortured and killed her classmate, Colleen Slemmer, with her boyfriend, and she’s been on death row ever since.
The whole situation is just a mess, and I’m not sure what the solution is. But one thing’s for sure, the state of Tennessee needs to go back to the drawing board and figure out how to carry out death sentences without, you know, failing to kill the person. It’s not exactly a confidence booster for the justice system. And Pike, well, she’s still alive, and I’m sure she’s not exactly thrilled about the whole ordeal.
In conclusion, the story of Christa Pike’s failed execution is just a wild ride from start to finish. I mean, who survives two doses of pentobarbital? It’s like something out of a movie. And the fact that the execution team had such a hard time getting the IV lines in is just the icing on the cake. As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up. And on that note, I’m going to go refill my coffee cup, because this story has left me shaking my head in wonder.
