Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. The head of Tennessee’s prison system, Frank Strada, is resigning after a botched execution left Christa Pike unconscious and on a ventilator. I mean, you can’t make this stuff up. Governor Bill Lee announced the resignation and also said that former US Attorney Ed Stanton would lead a review of what happened in Pike’s death chamber. This is not the first time Tennessee has had issues with executions – it’s the second time since May that they’ve failed to, well, execute someone who was supposed to be executed.
It seems that Strada’s resignation was a result of pressure from fellow Republicans and other elected officials. He said in a statement that resigning was “in the best interest of Tennesseans” while Stanton’s review is conducted. The state failed to execute Pike despite administering two doses of a lethal drug, pentobarbital. Bless their hearts, it’s a mess.
Pike, now 50, was 18 when she and her boyfriend tortured and killed a classmate, Colleen Slemmer, in a jealous rage in 1995. She became one of the youngest women to be sent to death row. Her lawyers welcomed Strada’s departure but said “it does nothing to help Christa now.” They’re right, of course – this whole situation is a systemic failure that goes far beyond any one person.
The governor has ordered an independent review and halted any new executions. Strada took over the Correction Department in January 2023 after serving as deputy director of the Arizona Department of Corrections. It turns out that some Arizona executions had snags under his watch, including trouble finding veins to administer lethal drugs and unsuccessful attempts to insert IV lines.
Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a whole saga on our hands. I’m not sure what’s more shocking – the fact that Tennessee’s execution system is so flawed or that Strada’s problematic history of executions in Arizona was well known when he was hired to fix execution problems in Tennessee.
In conclusion, this whole situation is a hot mess. Christa Pike is still on a ventilator, and the state of Tennessee is trying to figure out what went wrong. As I finish my coffee, I’m left wondering how something like this could happen in the first place. I guess that’s what happens when you have a system that’s more focused on punishment than people. And on that note, I’m off to refill my coffee cup – this story has left me shaken, not stirred.
