Josh Homme has been a part of multiple beloved bands, and while his main gig Queens of the Stone Age continue to tour and release new music to great acclaim, fans are pining for reunions of his supergroup Them Crooked Vultures and his pioneering stoner-rock band Kyuss. Them Crooked Vultures was a short-lived project, with Homme teaming up with Nirvana/Foo Fighters legend Dave Grohl (drums, backing vocals) and Led Zeppelin icon John Paul Jones (bass, keyboards). The trio released a single self-titled album in 2009, playing shows that year and in 2010, but have been dormant since then, save for a couple of reunion performances at a pair of Taylor Hawkins tribute shows in 2022.
Them Crooked Vultures Reunion
While there was talk of a second album, it hasn’t materialized, but as Josh Homme told Heavy Consequence, he would jump at the chance to play with Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones again. “I’d love to do that again, and I know Jones would, too, and, and I know Dave would, too,” Homme told us. “I’m gonna put all the responsibility on Dave. It’s not my job to put us together — that’s Dave’s job. That’s such a cool thing at the end of the day to be able to do that. So, it’s hard not to wanna do more of that. So, I wanna do it, too.”
Kyuss Reunion
Kyuss, meanwhile, haven’t been active for more than 30 years, with the band having called it quits in 1995. A reunion would be a little more complicated, thanks to a legal dispute between members over the band name several years back. However, Homme isn’t ruling out reviving Kyuss, especially if it is done right. “I think about it a lot because there was a moment where the legacy of it got tarnished because of… well, there’s no need to get into all that,” said Homme. “It should be about music. The rest doesn’t matter. So, sometimes I think about that. I always had this thing: no reunions, no sequels. You gotta remember, that band started when I was 13 years old, and so I have such beautiful memories of just being kids and growing up through that.”
Homme continued, “By the same token, sometimes if someone said, ‘Do you wanna rekindle this thing that happened when you were 15?’ You might be like, ‘Oh, geez.’ It’s just a tricky thing, ’cause I love that the fans have taken over the legacy of Kyuss, and that’s so rare and cool… I just don’t wanna mess it up. I don’t know. Would it be better to do that? I just don’t know. I guess I’m just sort of perpetually on the fence about it. I just don’t wanna fuck it up somehow.”
Current Projects
In the meantime, Homme has plenty on his plate these days. Queens of the Stone Age are set to release their new album, Perfecth, on October 30th, while Homme just announced a November 16th benefit concert featuring Jack Black, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Beck, and more.
In conclusion, Josh Homme has expressed interest in revisiting his past projects, including Them Crooked Vultures and Kyuss. While nothing is set in stone, fans can hold out hope that these reunions may become a reality in the future. For now, Homme is focused on his current endeavors, including the upcoming Queens of the Stone Age album and benefit concert. Fans can stay tuned for more updates on these projects and potential reunions.
