Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about President Trump’s latest comments on the Iran conflict, and I’ve got to say, it’s a real doozy. He’s calling it “small potatoes” and a “military conflict” rather than a war. I mean, I’ve heard of downplaying things, but this is something else. According to Trump, “A lot of people don’t call it a war. I call it a military conflict because it’s small potatoes for us. It’s not a big thing.” Okay, sure, because nothing says “not a big thing” like a six-month conflict that’s caused a spike in gas prices and led to the deaths of 18 American service-members.
I’m not sure what’s more amusing, the fact that Trump is trying to minimize the conflict or that Vice President JD Vance said the same thing just a day earlier. Vance claimed that the conflict shouldn’t be termed a “war” since major combat operations ended months ago. I guess that’s one way to look at it, but I’m not sure the families of those 18 service-members would agree.
Trump also said that the conflict is “intermittent” and that “we’re not fighting right now. There’s no fighting.” Uh-huh, because nothing says “no fighting” like targeting nearly 60 military targets around the Strait of Hormuz. I mean, I know the US is just trying to escort ships through the waterway, but still, it sounds like there’s a bit of a dispute going on.
The administration has been signaling that it’s moving past a military strategy and focusing on choking off Iran financially by applying sanctions on its trading partners. But so far, they’ve stopped short of punishing China, Tehran’s biggest economic lifeline. Trump downplayed China’s involvement, saying “They are not really involved. Very little involvement by China. China could have plenty of involvement.” Okay, got it, China is involved, but not really.
Trump also talked about potential new routes and pipelines that could bypass the Strait of Hormuz, including an overland alternative through Syria. Because, you know, that’s exactly what the Middle East needs, more pipelines and routes for oil to flow through. And he raised the prospect of a new operation soon to take out a suspected Iranian nuclear site south of Tehran. Because, you know, that’s always a good idea, taking out a nuclear site.
In the end, Trump still insisted that the conflict was not a war, saying “It’s a military conflict, but it’s very intermittent. I could see somebody not calling it a war.” I’m not sure what to make of all this, folks, but it seems like Trump is trying to have his cake and eat it too. He wants to downplay the conflict, but also take credit for the US’s “tremendous success” in the region. As he said, “I don’t think it matters what you call it. What matters is the fact that we have had tremendous success.” Well, I suppose that’s one way to look at it.
In conclusion, the Iran conflict is a complex and multifaceted issue, and Trump’s comments are just the latest in a long line of attempts to spin the situation. While it’s understandable that the administration wants to downplay the conflict, it’s hard to ignore the facts on the ground. The US has been involved in a six-month conflict that’s caused a spike in gas prices and led to the deaths of 18 American service-members. So, the next time you’re filling up your gas tank, just remember, it’s all “small potatoes.” 😂
