Folks, I’m reading this article about President Trump’s latest 9/11 story, and I’m trying not to spill my coffee. According to CNN, Trump told a tale at the White House on Tuesday about being carried away by firefighters amid fears of an imminent building collapse at some point after the 9/11 attack. Now, I’m not saying it’s entirely impossible, but there are some holes in his story that are bigger than the ones in my favorite coffee mug.
Trump claimed that he went to Ground Zero “right after this happened” and that his crew of workers was there to help with the rescue effort. However, there’s no public evidence to support this claim, and a former Trump Organization executive told Politico in 2016 that Trump didn’t do much out of the ordinary on that day. In fact, Trump was miles away from the World Trade Center during the attack, and there’s no record of him being whisked out of any building near Ground Zero that day.
The White House didn’t provide any evidence to back up Trump’s story, and instead, spokesperson Davis Ingle pivoted to an attack on the media. Bless their hearts, it seems like they’re trying to deflect attention from the fact that Trump’s story doesn’t quite add up. Trump’s story has changed over time, and in a 2016 version, he claimed that the moment the firemen helped him happened “a couple of days” after the attack.
Now, I’m not saying that Trump didn’t experience any of the chaos and fear that came with the 9/11 attacks. But it seems like he’s trying to make himself sound like a hero, and that’s just not supported by the facts. There were indeed fears that One Liberty Plaza would collapse, but there’s no proof that Trump was personally swept up in one of these moments of panic.
It’s also worth noting that Trump has never presented evidence for his claims that he worked at Ground Zero or organized a group that worked at the site. Richard Alles, a retired New York Fire Department official, told The New York Times in 2019 that he never witnessed Trump at Ground Zero, and that if Trump had sent a crew of 100 workers, “there would be a record of it.”
In conclusion, Trump’s 9/11 story is a bit of a stretch, and it seems like he’s trying to make himself sound more heroic than he actually was. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded like a great story to tell, but unfortunately, it’s just not supported by the facts. So, let’s just take a deep breath, enjoy our coffee, and remember that sometimes, you just can’t make this stuff up – or can you? 😊
