Alaska Trial Run Ends Predictably For Democrats

Alaska Trial Run Ends Predictably For Democrats

Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. The Alaska primary results are in, and it looks like Democratic former Rep. Mary Peltola is leading Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan by a pretty significant margin – 48.1% to 42.7%. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Big Elephant, it’s just a primary, what’s the big deal?” Well, the big deal is that this is a key Senate race, and the fact that Peltola is ahead is pretty encouraging for Democrats. And let’s be real, it’s not every day you see an incumbent senator losing in the first round of voting.

I mean, the state uses an all-party primary system and ranked-choice voting, which can make things a bit more complicated. But still, the results are pretty clear – Peltola is ahead, and Sullivan is trailing. And it’s not like there were other serious contenders in the race, so this is a pretty direct matchup between the two. Bless their hearts, the Republicans might be in trouble in this one.

Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “But Big Elephant, this is just the primary, the general election is what really matters.” And you’re right, of course. But the fact that Peltola is leading now, and that the votes that are still being counted are likely to be advance ballots that she’s done well with, suggests that she might actually expand her lead. And let’s not forget, the other Dan Sullivan – the one who didn’t have a party affiliation on the ballot – is in third place at 2.4%, which could potentially take some votes away from the Republican senator.

It’s also worth noting that the polling has suggested that this Senate seat is one of the key ones that could decide whether Democrats win a majority in the Senate. And so far, the numbers are looking pretty good for them. I mean, it’s not like the Republicans are going to give up or anything, but still, this is a big deal. You can’t make this stuff up, folks – the idea that an incumbent senator could lose in a primary is just crazy. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a real barnburner of a race on our hands.

But in all seriousness, this is a big deal. The fact that Peltola is leading, and that the Democrats might have received a majority of votes in the primary, suggests that they’re in a strong position heading into the general election. And with the ranked-choice voting system, it’s possible that Sullivan could recoup some of those votes, but still, it’s a tough road ahead for him.

And let’s not forget, this is a state that President Donald Trump carried by double-digits in 2024, so if the Democrats can win here, that’s a big deal. It’s not just about this one Senate seat, it’s about the whole majority. And with the polling looking competitive in other states like Iowa, Ohio, and Texas, this could be a real turning point in the election.

So, what does it all mean? Well, for now, it means that Peltola is in the lead, and Sullivan is trailing. But we’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out in the general election. One thing’s for sure, though – this is going to be a wild ride. And I’m going to be here, sipping my coffee and enjoying the show. 🐘
