Legendary stoner doom metal act Sleep have announced Hemispheres, their first album in eight years. Ahead of its release, the band has unveiled the new single “The Morrisist.”
Album Details
Hemispheres will arrive September 3rd digitally and October 30th in physical formats via Jack White’s Third Man Records. It marks Sleep’s follow-up to 2018’s The Sciences, and the band’s first album without founding guitarist Matt Pike (also of High on Fire fame).
For this album, Sleep feature a revamped lineup that includes founding singer-bassist Al Cisneros alongside newcomers Bubba Dupree (Void) on guitar and Dale Crover (Melvins) on drums. The LP was recorded at the Melvins’ studio with longtime engineer Toshi Kasai.
New Single and Tracklist
“The Morrisist” follows the single “Have Spacesuit Will Travel,” which was unveiled in June, and is also included on Hemispheres‘ five-song tracklist. That tune was named our Heavy Song of the Week upon its release.
Lyrically, “The Morrisist” serves, in part, as an ode to the riff, with a reference to the godfather of heavy metal himself, Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi: “A neon knight/ Reignites/ The SG is within/ A tempered blade/ A promise made/ Stands the Iommicist.”
Comic Book and Tour
Along with the new album, the band is releasing the Sleep Comic Book via Third Man Books. Issue No. 1 will ship on September 22nd, and is available for pre-order.
Sleep will support Hemispheres with a previously announced headlining North American tour that kicks off September 8th in San Diego, and runs through a November 17th show in Washington, D.C.
