Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. A chemical tank exploded in Toledo, Ohio, and it’s a big deal. Hundreds of residents had to evacuate their homes or shelter in place due to fears of a toxic release. The mayor, Wade Kapszukiewicz, warned that the tank may still be explosive, which is just what you want to hear when you’re sipping your morning coffee. I mean, who doesn’t love a good explosion to start the day?
The explosion happened around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and a sheriff’s deputy was injured while responding to the incident. The mayor didn’t provide any information about the deputy’s condition, which is a bit concerning. I hope the deputy is okay and not too badly hurt.
The tank contained glycidyl methacrylate, which is an industrial chemical used to make plastics, paints, and coatings perform better. Sounds harmless, right? Well, not so much. If you come into contact with this stuff, you might feel like your eyes, nose, mouth, and skin are burning. And if you’re really unlucky, you might experience headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting. Just what I wanted to read about over my coffee.
The city fire department is warning people to be careful, and the director of the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, Karim Baroudi, said that the chemical is “really toxic” if you touch it or ingest it. He’s trying to figure out how much toxicity is in the air so he can give better guidance to residents. In the meantime, residents are advised to close their windows and take a shower if they experience any irritation.
First responders, hazmat teams, and safety teams are not approaching the tank because of the risk of more explosions. They’re going to reassess the situation later, which is probably a good idea. I mean, who wants to be the one to trigger another explosion? The city has ordered people within a 1-mile radius of the explosion to evacuate, and over 900 people have left the area. A shelter-in-place order has been issued for residents beyond the evacuation zone within a 3-mile radius.
It’s been a bit of a chaotic morning in Toledo, with fog hindering visibility and delaying efforts to use drones to monitor the site. But the mayor reassured residents that the fog is unrelated to the chemical explosion, so that’s a relief. The National Weather Service says the fog should lift by mid-morning, which will hopefully make things a bit easier for everyone involved.
The company responsible for the tank, MC Tank Transport, is working with the fire department and other emergency authorities. They’ve released a statement saying that their “immediate and overriding concern” is the safety of area residents, emergency responders, and their employees. Which is nice to hear, I suppose.
In conclusion, it’s been a wild morning in Toledo, Ohio, with a chemical tank explosion causing all sorts of chaos. I hope everyone stays safe and the situation gets under control soon. And to the residents of Toledo, I say: well, at least you’re not bored, right? I mean, who needs a quiet morning when you can have a toxic chemical spill to liven things up? 🙄
