Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Glenn Hughes — known for his work in Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Black Country Communion, and Trapeze, among other bands — has announced his retirement from touring and live performances.
The decision comes after the 75-year-old musician learned he must undergo another open-heart surgery.
Hughes stated via social media, “This past year, I’ve had some health issues. The results from numerous MRIs, CT scans and an echocardiogram have alerted my medical team that I need another open-heart surgery. I really have no option and no choice as health is my number one priority. Grateful to have been chosen with a life full with the gift of music… Thank you for walking beside me.”
Background and Recent Performances
Hughes had canceled his spring US tour earlier this year for an unnamed medical issue. His last live performance was on May 30th with his band the Dead Daisies, with whom he has recorded two studio albums. The performance came under the name the Purple Daisies, with a special set devoted half to Deep Purple material. A second show under the banner had been booked for October 2nd, but has since been canceled due to Hughes’ retirement.
A variety of fellow rockers and former collaborators commented on the post, showing their love and support for the famed musician.
Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme remarked, “A man who’s given us so much music and love with a heart as big yours… will one day have to rest and heal it. Look after yourself… and let us entertain you for a while.”
Former Guns ‘N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum commented, “My dear brother, Health is your main priority… We are here praying for you and sending the most healing vibes.”
Guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani said, “Wishing you the speediest of recoveries Glenn.”
Legacy and Career
Hughes has played in a number of legendary rock bands over the more than five decades of his career, including Trapeze, Deep Purple (Mark III and Mark IV lineups), Black Sabbath (Seventh Star album), and Black Country Communion, along with numerous guest appearances over the years. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Deep Purple in 2016.
He also released a number of solo albums throughout his career, most recently 2025’s Chosen.
With this announcement, Glenn Hughes will be stepping away from the stage, but his legacy and contributions to the world of rock music will undoubtedly continue to be celebrated by fans and fellow musicians alike.
