Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about this crazy story from Pennsylvania, where a police officer has been charged with voluntary manslaughter for fatally shooting a 22-year-old college student who ended up at the wrong house late at night. The student, Glenwood Pysher IV, was waiting for friends to pick him up when the officer, Cpl. Sean Farrell, arrived on the scene. Now, I’m no expert, but it seems like a pretty big mistake was made here.
The Montgomery County District Attorney, Kevin Steele, said that Farrell had less-than-lethal options available to him, including a taser, but chose to shoot Pysher instead. And get this – Pysher had his hands in the air and was not a threat at the time of the shooting. I mean, what’s going on here? The investigation found that Farrell was behind a car in the driveway, a safe distance from Pysher, and still chose to use deadly force.
The attorney for Pysher’s family is thanking the prosecutor for their work, and I don’t blame them one bit. This is just a terrible tragedy that could have been avoided. The family’s attorney, Ken Fulginiti, said that they’re looking forward to justice in this “horribly tragic, preventable and reckless conduct” that took the life of their son. I can only imagine how they must be feeling.
Now, I know some folks might be thinking, “But what about the officer’s perspective?” And I get that. However, it seems like Farrell made some serious mistakes here. The body-worn camera footage shows him walking down the driveway with his gun drawn, and then shooting Pysher after yelling at him to drop to the ground. But Pysher was already raising his hands and walking towards the officer – it just doesn’t add up.
The details of the shooting are pretty disturbing. Pysher was shot twice in the chest and was just 17 to 20 feet away from the officer at the time. It’s just heartbreaking to think about. The whole thing is a mess, and I’m not sure how this could have been handled worse.
As I finish reading this article, I’m just shaking my head. It’s a reminder that sometimes, even with the best training and intentions, things can go terribly wrong. And in this case, it’s just devastating. So, let’s all take a deep breath and hope that justice is served, and that we can learn from this tragedy to prevent something like it from happening again.
