I’m sipping my coffee and reading about Luigi Mangione, the guy who was taken into custody at a McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, 2024. Apparently, police found a treasure trove of evidence in his black backpack, including a loaded magazine wrapped in a pair of underwear – because, you know, that’s exactly where you want to store a loaded magazine. They also found a Faraday bag containing a passport, a phone, and a wallet, which is just a normal thing to carry around, right? I mean, who doesn’t have a Faraday bag in their backpack?
As I continue reading, I find out that the bag also contained multiple articles of clothing, toiletry items, a silencer, and a 3D-printed gun. Because, you know, you never know when you might need to print out a gun on the go. The District Attorney’s Office said the weapon matches ballistic evidence from the Manhattan crime scene, which is just a lovely coincidence. I’m sure it’s just a big misunderstanding.
The police also found handwritten entries from a red notebook that the District Attorney’s Office has described as a “manifesto” expressing frustration with the healthcare industry. Oh boy, this guy sounds like a real charmer. I’m sure his manifesto is just full of thoughtful and well-reasoned arguments about the pitfalls of the healthcare system. His DNA and fingerprints were recovered from several items discarded by the shooter near the crime scene, prosecutors said in court documents. Yeah, because that’s not suspicious at all.
In May, Judge Gregory Carro ruled that prosecutors in the upcoming state trial can use the gun and the red notebook with handwritten entries at trial. But items found during the initial search at the McDonald’s – including a loaded magazine, passport, wallet, cell phone, and computer chip – will be excluded, after the defense argued the bag was searched without a warrant. Well, isn’t that just peachy. I’m sure the defense is just thrilled to have some of the evidence thrown out.
As I finish reading this article, I’m left shaking my head. This guy’s backpack was like a treasure trove of crazy. I mean, who carries around a 3D-printed gun and a silencer? It’s just ridiculous. And the fact that he had a manifesto expressing frustration with the healthcare industry is just the cherry on top. I’m sure this trial is going to be a real circus. Anyway, that’s the story of Luigi Mangione, the guy who made headlines with his crazy backpack and his alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson.
