Bless their hearts, it’s not like they didn’t try to get it right. The FAA technicians from Spectrum Engineering conducted a coverage analysis and determined that the lack of line-of-sight was the main issue.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that the breakdown resulted from a telecommunications problem, and the teams are working together to resolve the issue. He told CNN that “we’ve found at a staff level, between the Marine One team and the FAA, there had been some telecom issues.” I guess that’s just a fancy way of saying they had a few hiccups in communication. But hey, at least they’re working together to fix it.
The report also notes that there were no documented history of reported problems with the frequency, and radio checks were conducted with no reported deficiencies. So, it’s not like this was a recurring issue or anything. The FAA has convened a safety review panel to investigate the incident, and agency leadership met with the White House Military Office helicopter unit to enhance coordination on three-minute lift notification and boost signal frequencies.
In conclusion, it seems like the incident was just a minor blip on the radar, and the teams are working together to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
