Trump Country Suddenly Less Trumpy Somehow

Trump Country Suddenly Less Trumpy Somehow

I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest voting trends in Ohio, and folks, it’s looking like Democrats are more enthusiastic to vote this year. After the first few days of early voting, Democrats make up a larger share of pre-election voters than they did two years ago, even in the most Republican parts of the state. I mean, who wouldn’t want to get a head start on voting, right? It’s not like the lines are going to get any shorter on Election Day.

Now, I know what you’re thinking – what about the Republican strongholds? Well, it turns out that in counties that voted for President Donald Trump by 20 points or more, the Republican lead has shrunk from 30 percentage points to just five points. That’s a pretty significant shift, if you ask me. And in counties that voted most strongly for former Vice President Kamala Harris, voters are about 25 points more Democratic. It’s like the whole state is turning blue or something.

But here’s the thing – we can’t get too comfortable just yet. Party registration data doesn’t reveal who voters actually marked their ballots for, and these trends could change. I mean, Republicans have been known to vote early in person or on Election Day, so we’ll have to wait and see how that plays out. And let’s not forget, it’s still very early – Ohio is only at about 11% of its total early voting turnout from 2022. That’s like, barely a drop in the bucket.

According to the latest data, the overall electorate so far is about 27 points more Democratic than it was at the same point in 2024. And in counties that went most strongly for Trump, the partisan shifts towards Democrats in pre-election voting have been pretty significant. I’m talking nearly 11 points in some cases. Now, I’m not one to read too much into early voting data, but it’s definitely interesting to see how things are shaping up.

In New Jersey, the story is a bit different. Democrats had a weak election in 2024, but this year, the counties that were strongest for Trump are seeing some big partisan shifts towards Democrats. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like the Garden State is getting a little more blue by the day. And with in-person early voting not having started yet, who knows what will happen when it does.

Ohio’s data also reveals a shift in the way people are voting. It looks like Americans are moving away from voting by mail after the Covid-19 pandemic. I mean, who needs the convenience of voting from home when you can stand in line, right? Just kidding, I’m all for making voting easier, not harder. But seriously, early in-person voting is at 72% of what it was at this point in 2024, while mail voting is at just 25%. That’s a pretty significant drop, if you ask me.

In conclusion, it’s looking like Democrats are pretty enthusiastic about voting this year, and the trends are shifting in their favor. But we can’t get too comfortable just yet – it’s still early, and a lot can happen between now and Election Day. And who knows, maybe the Republicans will come out strong on Election Day and turn the whole thing around. Stranger things have happened, right? As I finish my coffee, I’m left wondering – what’s going to happen next? Only time will tell, folks.
