Goliath Lives Up to Name, Drops Rider to Death

Goliath Lives Up to Name, Drops Rider to Death

Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest incident at Six Flags Over Georgia, where a man died after falling off a roller coaster. I mean, that’s just terrifying. The park has been open for nearly 60 years, and I’m sure they’ve had their fair share of accidents, but this one is just heartbreaking. According to CNN affiliate WSB-TV, the park opened in the summer of 1967, and over the years, it’s become a popular destination for thrill-seekers.

I was reading that the “Great American Scream Machine” roller coaster opened at the park in 1973, and at the time, it was the world’s tallest, longest, and fastest roller coaster. That’s quite a claim to fame, if you ask me. And now, the park is home to 45 roller coasters, which is just mind-boggling. I mean, who needs that many roller coasters in one place? According to CNN affiliate WXIA-TV, the park welcomes about 3 million guests annually, which is a staggering number.

But, as we all know, with great thrill comes great risk. In July, two people were seriously injured in the park after a tree fell on visitors during a storm. I mean, what are the chances, right? And then, there were fights and a shooting at the park during its opening weekend in 2024, which prompted officials to call a public safety meeting. It’s like, what’s going on at this park? Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’re all reading about it.

Now, I know Six Flags is saying that every ride at its parks undergoes extensive inspection and maintenance procedures, which is reassuring, I suppose. Daily inspections are undertaken by park teams, and third parties, including state ride inspectors, insurance inspectors, and engineering experts, also regularly evaluate the rides. But, you have to wonder, what went wrong in this case? I mean, it’s not like they’re just slapping together some rickety old roller coaster and hoping for the best.

As I’m reading this, I’m thinking, you can’t make this stuff up. I mean, a man dies after falling off a roller coaster, and we’re all supposed to be shocked and outraged. But, let’s be real, folks, accidents happen. And, bless their hearts, the people at Six Flags are probably devastated by this incident. They’re going to do their best to figure out what happened and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

In conclusion, the incident at Six Flags Over Georgia is a tragic reminder that, no matter how many safety precautions we take, accidents can still happen. The park has a long history, and it’s had its fair share of incidents, but this one is particularly devastating. As I finish my coffee, I’m left thinking, well, that’s just the way the roller coaster crumbles, I suppose. And, on a lighter note, maybe it’s time for me to stick to the merry-go-round.
