I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, where nine people were killed on Friday, according to Governor Josh Shapiro. I almost spilled my coffee when I saw the number of victims – it’s just heartbreaking. The police said the suspected shooter was also dead, which is a small comfort, I suppose. The fact that the city is still trying to process the loss of life and devastation is just devastating.
Folks, I’ve been reading about this story for a while now, and it’s just getting more and more disturbing. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah told a local news station that he’s never seen anything like this in his 28-plus years on the job. I can imagine – it’s not every day you see a tragedy like this unfold. He also said that the circumstances of the shooting were “deeply disturbing,” which is just a nice way of saying it’s a real mess.
I’m trying to understand what happened, but the police are being tight-lipped about the whole thing. Chief Lorah declined to provide more details, which is understandable, given the sensitivity of the situation. But it’s hard not to wonder what could have led to such a horrific event. Maybe someday we’ll get some answers, but for now, it’s just a lot of questions and not a lot of sleep for the people of Erie.
Governor Shapiro is offering his support to the city, which is nice, I suppose. He said he’s giving Erie Mayor Daria Devlin his administration’s “full support,” whatever that means. I’m sure it’s just a bunch of bureaucratic nonsense, but hey, it’s the thought that counts, right? The city of Erie posted on Facebook that the suspected shooter was dead and there was no threat to the public, which is a relief, I guess.
In the end, it’s just a really sad story, and I’m not sure what to make of it all. But hey, at least the coffee is still good, and that’s something to hold onto, right? The people of Erie are going to need all the support they can get, and I’m sure they’ll get it from their community and beyond. And who knows, maybe someday we’ll figure out how to stop these senseless shootings, but until then, we’re just left to shake our heads and wonder what’s wrong with the world.
