Trump Finds Creative Ways To Spin Gas Prices Into Gold

Trump Finds Creative Ways To Spin Gas Prices Into Gold

Oh boy, folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump is trying to spin high gas prices as a positive, and I’m not sure what’s more astonishing, the fact that he’s trying to make this claim or that he thinks people will actually buy it. According to Trump, gas prices are lower now than they were under President Biden. Now, I’m no math expert, but I think someone needs to fact-check this claim, pronto.

Trump said at a rally in Ohio, “Remember, your prices – your gas prices – are lower than when Biden was president.” And he didn’t stop there, he also threw in a comment about Iran, because, why not? But let’s focus on the gas prices, shall we? The national average gas price on Monday was about $4.36 per gallon, which, by the way, is higher than it was on most days during Biden’s presidency. In fact, the national average was higher than that on only 76 of Biden’s 1,460 full days as president. That’s about 5% of the time, folks.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Big Elephant, what about Ohio, where Trump was speaking?” Well, the story is similar, my friends. The state average gas price was lower during about 90% of Biden’s term than it was on Monday or Tuesday. And if we go back to January 20, 2025, when Trump returned to office, the national average gas price was about $3.12 per gallon, which is significantly lower than the current price. You have to go all the way back to 2022 to find any of the 76 days under Biden in which the national average exceeded its Monday level or any of the 77 days in which it exceeded its Tuesday level.

Trump could have accurately pointed out that the peak national average under Biden was higher than this week’s averages, but that’s not what he did. Instead, he chose to make a claim that’s only true for a small fraction of Biden’s presidency. And let’s not forget, Trump has made similar claims about gas prices in the past, and they’ve been debunked every time.

In addition to his gas price claims, Trump also reprised another favorite campaign line about inflation, saying that aside from oil and gas prices, “your other prices have all come down” since Biden’s presidency. Bless their hearts, this is not even close to true. Average consumer prices were up a seasonally adjusted 4.8% between January 2025 and August 2026, and far more items had gotten more expensive since Trump returned to office than had gotten cheaper.

You can check the numbers for yourself, folks. The data is out there, and it’s not pretty. Categories with increases included food, shelter, medical care services, and apparel. I mean, who doesn’t love paying more for groceries and housing? It’s like Christmas come early!

In conclusion, Trump’s claims about gas prices are, well, let’s just say they’re not entirely accurate. And his comments about inflation are downright misleading. But hey, at least he’s consistent, right? As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up, folks. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, but to me, it just sounds like another day in politics. And that’s a wrap, folks! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go fill up my gas tank – and maybe grab a coffee to go with it 🚗💰.
