Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest market turmoil, and let me tell you, it’s a wild ride. Tech stocks are having a rough week, with the Nasdaq Composite falling roughly 2.5% on Friday, bringing its weekly losses to almost 5%. The S&P 500 didn’t fare much better, falling 1.4% and putting its weekly losses at more than 2%. It’s like the whole market is one big rollercoaster, and I’m just along for the ride.
I mean, just 10 days ago, the Nasdaq and S&P were clinching record highs, and now it seems like the sky is falling. The market is stumbling over concerns about rising borrowing costs and the AI boom’s reliance on debt. It’s like everyone’s waiting for the other shoe to drop, and it’s making for some exciting reading.
At the center of all this drama is CoreWeave, a neocloud company that’s got tens of billions of dollars of debt on its balance sheet. Its bond yields have surged to levels that signal distress, and investors are getting a little nervous. Gil Luria, head of technology research at D.A. Davidson, told CNN that CoreWeave is like the “subprime tranche of the AI trade,” and that’s why it’s selling off first. I guess that’s one way to put it.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang tried to calm everyone down on Thursday, saying he’s optimistic about CoreWeave, but it was short-lived. The company’s stock dropped 14% on Friday, and it’s lost one-quarter of its value this week. I’m no expert, but it seems like the market is a little spooked.
And if that’s not enough, there’s also the issue of semiconductor chipmakers. A closely watched index of semiconductor chip stocks dropped 3.9% on Friday, falling for the eighth day in a row. Investors were expecting a massive AI buildout and a shortage of chips, but now they’re getting cold feet. Thomas Martin, portfolio manager at Globalt Investments, said “the market sells first, asks questions later,” and that’s why we’re seeing so much volatility.
The semis index is down more than 20% since a peak in June, although it’s still up almost 60% year-to-date. South Korea’s stock market had a tumultuous week, with the benchmark Kospi index tumbling 14.5% – its worst weekly performance since 2008. It’s like the whole world is watching and waiting to see what happens next.
The Kospi had soared this year, but it’s wiped out all of its gains across the past six months and is now up 35% year-to-date. Semiconductor chips are critical for AI, and they’ve become an increasingly important part of the stock market. The semis industry accounts for roughly one-fifth of the S&P 500’s market value, so further losses could spell trouble for the broader market.
Wall Street’s fear gauge, the VIX, surged 30% on Friday and rose above 20 points – a level that signals elevated volatility in markets. It’s like the whole market is holding its breath, waiting to see what happens next. And I’m just sitting here, sipping my coffee, thinking “well, this is interesting.” The market is always full of surprises, and this week is certainly no exception. I guess that’s why they call it the stock market – it’s always a wild ride.
