Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Katie Zacharia’s stint as White House press secretary was a wild ride, and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. She was on a media tour, trying to save her job, when Lawrence Jones from “Fox and Friends” asked her if she wished she had disclosed not passing the bar exam, despite claiming to be a lawyer. Her response? “Those questions weren’t asked.” Yeah, that’s not how this works, Katie.
I mean, bless their hearts, the White House thought they had found the perfect person for the job, but it turns out they didn’t do their due diligence. It’s not about qualifications; it’s about basic background checks. You can’t make this stuff up. The White House confirmed that Zacharia’s tenure was a mess, and it’s far from the biggest foul-up of Trump’s second term, but it’s definitely up there on the embarrassment quotient.
Zacharia’s inaugural briefing was a disaster, and her media appearances only made things worse. She was peppered with tough questions from conservative Trump allies, and even Sean Hannity was skeptical. It’s not like the White House didn’t have time to find the right person; they had two months to replace Karoline Leavitt. But no, they rushed into it, and now they have egg on their face.
The White House communications director, Steven Cheung, assured everyone that Zacharia had a “tremendous start” and would be remembered as “one of the all-time greats.” Oops. I guess that didn’t quite work out. The whole episode solidifies the narrative of Trump’s chaotic leadership style and inability to manage the federal government. And let’s not forget the other times Trump removed officials shortly after they were confirmed or made decisions that were widely opposed by Americans.
It’s no wonder that a CNN poll in July showed that 65% of Americans disapproved of Trump’s management of the federal government. Even 28% of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents disapproved. “A Zacharia” might not be a thing, but her tenure is definitely a shorthand for Trump’s unforced errors. As I finish my coffee, I have to say, this whole ordeal has been a mess, and I’m not surprised it ended the way it did. 🙄
