Because Who Needs Security At Airports Anyway

Folks, I’m sipping on my coffee and reading about the latest airport shenanigans, and I just can’t even. So, apparently, a Delta Air Lines passenger decided to make his own exit strategy at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California. He strolled out of an access door at gate 12 around 5:30 p.m. PT and proceeded to steal a vehicle on the tarmac. Because, you know, that’s exactly what you do when you’re waiting for your flight to Seattle. I mean, who needs security protocols, anyway?

So, this guy, who was later identified as Jay Barr, 26, stole an Alaska Airlines tug and drove it to gate 7, where he crashed into another vehicle. I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure that’s not how you’re supposed to use those things. And then, because he clearly hadn’t had enough excitement for one day, he tried to steal a lavatory service truck belonging to American Airlines. I guess he really wanted to make sure his bathroom experience was top-notch.

The airport police eventually caught up with him and arrested him on charges of vehicle theft, trespassing, and vandalism. And, of course, Delta Air Lines had to issue a statement saying that they take all incidents seriously and have zero tolerance for unlawful behavior. Because, you know, that’s not something you’d expect from an airline. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is currently holding Barr in custody, and CNN couldn’t find any legal representation for him. I’m sure he’ll have a great story to tell when he gets out, though.

The incident caused a bit of a security breach, and air traffic controllers had to notify pilots waiting on the tarmac. But, thankfully, airport crews were able to inspect the area and clear it of any debris or hazards, and planes were soon moving around the airfield again. John Wayne Airport, by the way, serves over 11 million passengers a year and has flights to 50 destinations. I’m sure this little incident will be a great addition to their marketing materials.

In all seriousness, though, it’s a good thing no one was hurt, and the situation was resolved quickly. But, come on, who tries to steal a tug and then a lavatory truck? You can’t make this stuff up. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a great story to tell. All in all, it’s just another day in the world of air travel, folks. And, on that note, I think I’ll just stick to my coffee and enjoy the rest of my day, incident-free. 🙄
