Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about Katie Zacharia’s first press briefing as the new White House press secretary, and I’ve got to say, it’s been an interesting read. Apparently, several White House officials are questioning how long she’ll keep her job after her first briefing on Tuesday, noting her performance was unlikely to satisfy President Donald Trump. I mean, that’s not exactly a ringing endorsement, is it? One official called her initial appearance “unusual” and another characterized it as “brutal.” Ouch, bless their hearts.
I’m reading that Zacharia appeared at the podium for only about 15 minutes, and most of that time was dedicated to an opening statement touting Trump’s accomplishments. About 5½ minutes were spent on questions from the press, which is pretty brief compared to her predecessor, Karoline Leavitt, whose briefings lasted for about an average of 45 minutes. I’m thinking, what’s the hurry, Katie? You’ve got to give the press a chance to ask some questions, right?
It seems like Zacharia had a prewritten list of reporters to call on, including one from conservative outlet Breitbart, another from Fox News, and the last at the Daily Mail. I’m not sure what’s going on here, but it sounds like she was playing it safe. I mean, you can’t make this stuff up, folks. The briefing was notably shorter than what had become the norm, and other advisers to the president described it as awkward, stilted, and, at times, uncomfortable.
Now, I’m reading that Zacharia said she was cutting the briefing short because Trump would likely soon take reporter questions on the White House South Lawn before he departed for Alaska. Okay, that makes sense, I guess. But still, it’s a bit unusual, don’t you think? I mean, Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’re all talking about it.
It’s unclear on what cadence Zacharia will brief reporters, but a CNN Reliable Sources analysis found that Leavitt held formal briefings about once a week on average before having her second child. I’m thinking, maybe Katie should take a page out of Karoline’s book and get a bit more comfortable in that role. After all, practice makes perfect, right?
In conclusion, it’s been an interesting first briefing for Katie Zacharia, and I’m sure we’ll all be keeping an eye on her to see how she does in the future. I’m just hoping she’ll give the press a bit more time to ask questions and won’t be so quick to cut things short. And who knows, maybe she’ll even learn to love the job and become a pro at handling those tough questions. But for now, I’m just going to sit back, sip my coffee, and enjoy the show. After all, as they say, “the show must go on,” and I’m happy to be along for the ride.
