Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. It seems like a big day for executions in the US, with three scheduled to take place on the same day. Tennessee put a man to death for killing a motel maid back in 1985, Oklahoma executed a man for killing his girlfriend in 2003, and Alabama is set to execute a man for the rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl. I mean, it’s not every day you see three executions happening at the same time, that’s for sure.
Now, let’s take a look at the Oklahoma case. Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez, a 70-year-old man, was executed by lethal injection for killing his girlfriend, Olimpia Fisher, back in 2003. Apparently, he shot her in one eye, waited about eight minutes, and then finished her off with a shot to the other eye. Bless their hearts, I can only imagine the pain and suffering she must have endured. Cuesta-Rodriguez had said he regretted killing Fisher and didn’t ask for clemency. I guess when you do something that heinous, you’ve got to face the music.
In Tennessee, Anthony Darrell Hines was executed by lethal injection for the 1985 murder of Catherine Jean Jenkins, a 54-year-old motel maid. He stabbed her to death while she was working, and was sentenced to death in 1986. His execution date came just three months after another execution was called off due to problems with inserting an IV. I guess the second time was the charm, unfortunately for Hines.
And then there’s the Alabama case, which is just plain disturbing. Jeremy Williams, a 42-year-old man, pleaded guilty to raping and killing a 5-year-old girl, Kamarie Holland, in 2021. He filmed his attack on the girl and kept her body to continue abusing her. It’s just shocking, horrible, and disgusting, as the district attorney put it. Williams asked for his death sentence to be carried out, and if it goes forward, it will be Alabama’s first execution of the year.
It’s worth noting that eleven states carried out executions in 2025, and if the Tennessee and Alabama executions take place, six states will have had executions in 2026. Florida has been particularly active, executing two men on the same day in July and putting 31 prisoners to death since the start of 2025. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.
In conclusion, it’s been a big day for executions in the US, with three states carrying out death sentences. While it’s never an easy topic to discuss, it’s an important one. As I finish my coffee, I’m left wondering what the future holds for the death penalty in this country. And on a lighter note, I’m just glad I didn’t spill my coffee while reading about all these executions – that would’ve been a real mess!
