Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about this wild story involving Christian Castro, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who’s been charged with shooting a Venezuelan immigrant and lying about it. Apparently, Castro was released from a Texas jail after a judge refused to order his return to Minnesota. I mean, you can’t make this stuff up, right? Castro is accused of firing a gun through the front door of a Minneapolis home, shooting 24-year-old Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg. And to make matters worse, Castro allegedly falsely accused Sosa-Celis and another man of attacking an ICE officer with a broom handle and a snow shovel. I’m shaking my head over here.
So, Castro was arrested in Cameron County, Texas, back in May, and Minnesota authorities have been seeking his extradition ever since. But, under Texas law, Castro had to be released after 90 days of detention, which was Thursday. I’m sure the folks in Minnesota are thrilled about this development. Minnesota officials believe Castro could flee to Mexico, and I don’t blame them for thinking that. I mean, Castro has been making calls to a woman in Mexico, talking about marrying her and buying a house there. That sounds like a guy who’s planning his next move, if you know what I mean.
The judge in this case, U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr., wrote that he couldn’t prevent a county sheriff from releasing Castro or order Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to sign his extradition warrant. Abbott’s press secretary said the governor is just doing his duty by carefully considering the merits of extradition requests. But, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is not giving up, saying his office will keep litigating the case. I’m curious to see what happens next in this saga.
It’s worth noting that this whole situation is tied to the immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, which President Donald Trump used to justify his actions. Abbott cited an ongoing investigation into fraud in government social service programs in Minnesota as a reason for not responding to the extradition request. I’m not sure what to make of all this, but it sounds like a big mess.
The judge conceded that Castro could flee the country, but said that “the threat of injury by itself does not create an issue ripe for adjudication.” I’m no lawyer, but that sounds like a fancy way of saying that the court can’t do anything about it right now. Minnesota officials are probably pulling their hair out over this one.
