Because, you know, that’s exactly what you want to do at a protest – yell at someone who’s on your side. Lander, who’s a liberal Zionist, was there to protest Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat’s remarks, but some people didn’t take too kindly to his presence.
Apparently, some folks were shouting “We don’t want no Zionists here. Get the f**k out!” and “No Zionists, no Zionists,” while one guy even called him a “Zionist ball sack” – because that’s a totally respectful and constructive way to engage in a conversation. I mean, who needs civility when you’re trying to make a point, right? Lander, to his credit, seemed unfazed by the whole ordeal and even responded with a cheeky “Bring it on” when confronted by one of the hecklers.
Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “Big Elephant, what’s the big deal about Israel?” Well, let me tell you, it’s a contentious issue, especially among Democrats. The US support for Israel has been a major point of contention in the party, with some people accusing others of being too supportive of Israel’s actions in Gaza. Lander himself has referred to Israel’s offensive in Gaza as a genocide, which is a pretty strong statement. But hey, at least he’s consistent, right?
It’s not just Lander, though – other Democratic candidates have faced similar backlash. Like Scott Weiner, a California state senator who was surrounded by protesters at a Trans March in San Francisco. They accused him of supporting genocide in Gaza, which is a pretty serious accusation. Weiner, for his part, has said he supports Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state, but also opposes US military aid to Israel until they demonstrate a commitment to peace.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that the debate surrounding Israel is getting pretty heated, folks. It’s not just about policy disagreements anymore – it’s getting personal. And that’s not a good thing. I mean, can’t we all just get along and have a respectful conversation about our differences? Maybe that’s just the coffee talking, but it seems like a pretty reasonable ask to me.
