Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Todd Blanche, the man who helped keep Donald Trump out of jail, has been confirmed as the attorney general. I mean, what a career move, right? He went from being a prestigious member of New York’s legal establishment to becoming Trump’s go-to attorney, and now he’s the nation’s top law enforcement officer. Bless their hearts, it’s been a wild ride for Blanche.
He was confirmed by a vote of 50 to 49, with GOP Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski voting with Democrats against the nomination. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. The vote was that close, and now Blanche is officially in charge of the Justice Department. I’m sure this will be a totally normal and not-at-all-controversial tenure as attorney general.
Blanche has been instrumental in reshaping the department in Trump’s image, and it’s been a real treat to watch. He’s expanded the powers and protection around the presidency, overseen the mass firings of experienced prosecutors and longtime officials, and spearheaded a legal strategy that has made judges across the nation question the department’s decisions. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now it’s our reality.
The Justice Department has brought indictments against political figures, including former FBI Director James Comey, issued subpoenas seeking to identify journalists’ sources, created and then abandoned the controversial anti-weaponization fund, and approved a tax immunity deal between the president and the Internal Revenue Service. It’s been a real banner few months for the department, and I’m sure Blanche is just getting started.
