Folks, I’m reading this article about a boat capsizing in New York harbor, and I’m shaking my head. A woman and a child lost their lives when a boat overturned near Liberty Island on Saturday night. I mean, can you think of a more tragic way to go? The Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom and hope, and a boat capsizes right in front of it. It’s just heartbreaking.
The NYPD got a 911 call around 10:25 p.m. and sent in the cavalry – police divers and aviation teams. They managed to rescue 12 people, but unfortunately, the woman and infant didn’t make it. They were taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead. I can only imagine how tough this must be for the families involved.
Now, the US Coast Guard is investigating what caused the boat to capsize. They’re sending investigators to talk to the vessel’s captain, which is standard procedure, I suppose. I’m sure we’ll hear more about this in the coming days. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer is probably thinking, “This is a great story to lead with – tragedy, investigation, the whole works.”
The NYPD says no arrests have been made, which doesn’t surprise me. These things take time, and I’m sure they want to get to the bottom of it. I just hope they can figure out what happened and make sure it doesn’t happen again. It’s just so sad to think about – a fun evening out on the water turns into a disaster.
As I finish reading this article, I’m left thinking about how fragile life can be. One minute you’re enjoying the sights and sounds of New York harbor, the next… well, it’s just devastating.
