The Pentagon’s actions seem a bit suspicious, especially considering the publication’s history of independence. Stars and Stripes has been around for decades, and it’s always operated like a commercial newspaper, covering military news without too much interference from the government. But now, it seems like the Pentagon is trying to exert more control over the publication, and that’s not sitting well with the staffers.
The lawsuit alleges that the Pentagon retaliated against the staffers for a story that exposed conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. The story apparently didn’t paint the military in the best light, and now the Pentagon is trying to silence the publication. It’s a bit ironic, considering the military is always talking about the importance of a free press.
The complaint also names some big shots, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell, and Principal Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Andrew Brey. The lawsuit is seeking a temporary restraining order and permanent relief, which could get interesting.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time the Pentagon has been accused of trying to censor Stars and Stripes. There have been other lawsuits filed this year, including one by the publication’s ombudsman, Jacqueline Smith, who alleges that she was forced out for speaking out against the Pentagon’s actions.
The Pentagon’s excuse for firing the staffers is that they made statements to the media that amounted to insubordination. But the lawsuit says that the statements were personal opinions and didn’t violate any rules. It’s a bit of a stretch, if you ask me.
