Trump’s Golf Course Gets Tree-mendous Makeover

Trump's Golf Course Gets Tree-mendous Makeover

Folks, I’m sitting here with my coffee, reading about the latest drama involving the Trump administration, and I just can’t help but raise an eyebrow. It seems that a federal judge, Ana Reyes, is “furious” with the administration’s decision to cut down at least 430 trees from a Washington, DC, public golf course that President Donald Trump is seeking to renovate. I mean, who wouldn’t be furious, right? I’d be furious too if someone came in and started chopping down trees in my neighborhood without warning.

I’m trying to imagine the scene: a bunch of trees, just standing there, minding their own business, and then suddenly, chainsaws and bulldozers show up. It’s like something out of a bad movie. And the best part is, the administration claims it was just a routine maintenance thing, not related to Trump’s plans to renovate the golf course. Yeah, sure, because nothing says “routine maintenance” like cutting down hundreds of trees.

Judge Reyes is having none of it, though. She’s put a hold on any further tree removal and is holding an emergency hearing. I love it when judges get feisty like this. It’s like they’re saying, “Hey, you can’t just come in here and start chopping down trees without telling anyone.” Reyes even told the Justice Department attorneys that they’d lost credibility with her because they gave less than a day’s notice before cutting down the trees. Ouch, that’s gotta hurt.

The judge’s comments are just priceless. “More than just being upset and furious right now, I am just beyond disappointed with the government,” she said. And then she told the DOJ attorney that they did their “absolute worst” in terms of giving her and the plaintiffs a heads-up. I’m surprised she didn’t just throw her gavel at them.

It turns out that the park is one of several renovation projects Trump is working on in Washington, DC. And, of course, there’s a lot of controversy surrounding it, because why wouldn’t there be? The administration wants to turn the public course into a professional course, which could cost between $20 million and $49 million. That’s a lot of money, folks. And a lot of people are worried that it’ll take away a public and affordable place to play golf in the nation’s capital.

The Interior Department claims that the tree removal was part of a long-standing maintenance plan, but come on, who believes that? They gave notice of the tree removal plans on Friday evening, and by Saturday morning, crews were already chopping down trees. It’s like they were trying to sneak it in before anyone could stop them.

The judge has even demanded that a National Parks Service official testify at the hearing. Kevin Griess, the superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks, claims that he came up with the plan to cut down the trees after receiving an “education” from his staff on a 2019 directive to overhaul the golf course. Yeah, sure, because that’s exactly what I’d do if I wanted to justify chopping down hundreds of trees.

In conclusion, this whole thing is just a big mess. The Trump administration is trying to push through a renovation plan, and Judge Reyes is having none of it. I’m just sitting here, shaking my head, thinking, “What’s next?” It’s like they say, “When you want to make a good first impression, start with a good last impression.” In this case, the administration’s last impression is that of a bunch of tree-chopping, controversy-causing, chaos-makers. 🙄
