I mean, it’s not every day you see someone admit to something like that, even if it is with one of those fancy “Alford pleas” that basically says, “Hey, I’m not admitting guilt, but I know you’ve got enough evidence to convict me anyway.” Ricky Anderson, the officer in question, was a K-9 officer with the Columbus Police Department when he killed 20-year-old Donovan Lewis back in August 2022. Now, I’m not going to sit here and pretend like I know all the details, but it seems like the police were at Lewis’ apartment to arrest him on some pretty serious warrants, including domestic violence and felony improper handling of a firearm.
Now, Anderson’s attorneys were saying that he was justified in using deadly force, but an attorney for Lewis’ family is saying that body-camera footage shows Anderson firing his gun within a second of opening the bedroom door where Lewis was sleeping. I mean, that’s pretty troubling, if you ask me. And it’s not like this is an isolated incident – the U.S. Justice Department actually agreed to review the Columbus Police Department’s practices back in 2021 after a string of fatal police shootings of Black people.
It’s worth noting that Anderson’s plea deal means the state is dropping a murder charge, and his sentence could range from probation to three years in prison. But an attorney for Lewis’ family is saying that’s not enough, and I can understand why. I mean, the officer gets to go on with his life, while Lewis’ family is left to deal with the loss of their loved one. As Rex H. Elliott, the attorney, put it, “Is this truly justice?” It’s a tough question to answer, folks.
The whole thing is just a big mess, and it’s a reminder that our justice system is far from perfect. I’m not sure what the right answer is here, but I do know that it’s a tragedy all around. And let’s be real, the fact that Anderson is only facing up to three years in prison is just a drop in the bucket compared to the life that was lost.
In the end, it’s just another sad story about a life cut short, and a family left to pick up the pieces. Somewhere in all of this, I hope that justice is truly served, but it’s hard to see that right now. Anyway, that’s my two cents on the matter – take it for what it’s worth.
