Duncan Sheik Dies At 56 Singer Songwriter Behind Spring Awakening

Duncan Sheik, who earned a Grammy nomination for his 1996 debut single “Barely Breathing” and later won two Tony Awards for scoring the musical Spring Awakening, has died at the age of 56. According to The New York Times, Sheik died of cardiac arrest. The musician’s passing was confirmed by his team, who posted a statement on his social media accounts.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Duncan Sheik,” reads the statement. “The world has lost a singular talent, and deeply influential voice in music and theater. From his Grammy-nominated hit ‘Barely Breathing’ to his groundbreaking, Tony and Grammy Award-winning work on Spring Awakening, Duncan Sheik’s artistry touched many and leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.”

Duncan Sheik was a father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He will be remembered for his sensitivity, wit, intelligence, and depth of spirit he brought to those who knew and loved him. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love from his fans, friends, collaborators, and the artistic community. His musical legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Duncan Sheik passed away last night surrounded by love.”

Music Career

Duncan Sheik’s self-titled debut album was certified gold after its release, with “Barely Breathing” becoming a pop radio mainstay of the 1990s through to today. He released eight additional studio albums over the course of his career, in addition to the live album Live at the Cafe Carlyle and two compilations. He also composed the scores for the movies A Home at the End of the World and Through the Fire. For the stage, in addition to Spring Awakening, he wrote the music and lyrics for the adaptation of American Psycho, which was nominated for Outstanding New Score by the Outer Critics Circle Awards, and also collaborated on the musicals The Secret Life of Bees and Because of Winn-Dixie.
