Hindu Temple Plot Foiled Because Teens Are Bad At Secrecy Apparently

Hindu Temple Plot Foiled Because Teens Are Bad At Secrecy Apparently

Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about a potential mass shooting that was thwarted in a Chicago suburb, and I have to say, it’s a good thing the police were on top of it. A 19-year-old man, Alexandros Paporakis, was arrested and faces felony charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawfully possessing weapons. According to the police, he may have planned to target a Hindu place of worship, which is just terrifying to think about. I mean, who targets a temple? Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded like a great story to tell, and I’m sure it’s going to be all over the news for days.

The details of the case are pretty chilling. Paporakis, a Taco Bell cashier from Palatine, Illinois, allegedly sent his coworkers a document outlining his plan to carry out a mass shooting, as well as photos of tactical gear. He also apparently told them that he couldn’t wait to kill Indian people, which is just horrific. I’m not sure what’s more disturbing, the fact that he was planning to commit such a heinous act or that he was so open about it with his coworkers.

The police were able to locate and arrest Paporakis on Sunday afternoon, which is believed to be the day he was planning to carry out the attack. He had allegedly told his coworkers that Sunday was going to be “a special day,” which is just a really creepy thing to say. Prosecutors said that Paporakis had also called one of his coworkers earlier in the day, saying that his gun had jammed and he had to leave “super fast” without being seen.

The police chief, William Nord, said that protecting places of worship is a law enforcement priority, and I couldn’t agree more. It’s just sad that we live in a world where people feel the need to target innocent people who are just trying to practice their faith. Paporakis allegedly sent an eight-page document to one of his coworkers, titled “Why I fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto),” which described Indian, Jewish, and African American people as “subhumans” and outlined a plot to kill as many of them as possible.

When the police searched Paporakis’ home, they found all sorts of disturbing items, including an AR-style rifle without a serial number, loaded magazines and ammunition, and a gas canister labeled with a slur aimed at South Asians. They also found several items depicting Nazi symbolism, which is just disgusting. Paporakis allegedly described himself in the manifesto as “a sociopathic white supremacist Neo-Nazi filled with hatred, fantasizing about mass murder nearly every day.” I mean, what do you even say to that?

A judge has ruled that Paporakis will remain in jail pretrial, and he’s next scheduled to appear in court on October 30. I’m sure this case will continue to unfold in the coming weeks, and I’ll be keeping an eye on it. It’s just a reminder that there are still some really bad people out there, and we need to be vigilant.

In the end, it’s just a good thing that the police were able to catch Paporakis before he could carry out his twisted plan. I’m sure the people of Palatine, Illinois, are breathing a sigh of relief, and we should all be grateful that no one was hurt. As I finish my coffee, I’m left thinking that this world can be a really crazy place, and we just have to hope that the good guys keep winning. And to Paporakis, I say, well, bless his heart, I guess. 🙄
