Six Flags Back Open Because Thrill Seekers Need Their Fix

Six Flags Back Open Because Thrill Seekers Need Their Fix

So, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the reopening of Six Flags Over Georgia, and I have to say, it’s quite the story. The park reopened on a Friday evening, just a few days after a tragic incident where a teacher, Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, fell from the Goliath roller coaster. I mean, folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one – a 210-second ride reaching 70 mph and a height of 200 feet? That’s one wild ride. And to think, the family was just there to celebrate a 13th birthday. Bless their hearts.

The incident is still under investigation, but it seems that the ride had passed recent safety inspections. You can’t make this stuff up – the ride’s manufacturer, Bolliger & Mabillard, has a “stellar” safety record, according to some expert. Yet, here we are, with a family grieving and a community in shock. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a big story on our hands.

As I kept reading, I found out that the parkgoers were pretty calm about the whole thing. One mom said she visits the park two or three times a week and wasn’t going to let this incident scare her off. I guess that’s one way to look at it – after all, accidents can happen anywhere, right? But still, it’s hard not to wonder what could’ve been done to prevent this tragedy.

The investigation is ongoing, and Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John King is looking into whether state safety requirements were followed. I’m no expert, but it seems like they’re taking this pretty seriously. And hey, maybe we’ll finally get some answers about what happened on that fateful day.

It’s also worth noting that Six Flags has a pretty thorough inspection process in place, with daily checks by park teams and regular evaluations by third-party experts. But, as one professor pointed out, if the primary restraint fails, you’re left with nothing. Yeah, that’s a pretty scary thought.

As the story unfolded, I found out that at least 10 other roller coasters across six other Six Flags locations are closed “out of an abundance of caution.” I guess that’s better safe than sorry, right? And the park’s president is all about supporting those affected and maintaining the safe operation of the park. Okay, sure, that sounds like a plan.

In the end, it’s just a really sad story, and I can only imagine how tough this must be for the family and friends of Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem. As I finish my coffee, I’m left thinking that sometimes, even with all the safety precautions in the world, terrible things can still happen. And that’s just the way it is, folks. 🙏

The incident at Six Flags Over Georgia is a sobering reminder that even in a place meant for fun and excitement, tragedy can strike. As the investigation continues, we can only hope that the truth will come out and that something like this will never happen again. And who knows, maybe one day we’ll have roller coasters with extra safety features – a guy can dream, right? In any case, my coffee is empty, and I’m ready for a refill.
