I’m sipping my coffee and reading about a man who died at Six Flags Over Georgia, and I have to say, it’s a tragic story. According to CNN, the man fell off a roller coaster, and several others were injured. Witnesses told CNN affiliate WXIA that they watched in horror as the man fell off the ride. I can only imagine how scary that must have been for everyone involved. Cobb County police confirmed the incident, and Six Flags Over Georgia released a statement saying they are “deeply saddened” by the incident and offering their condolences to the victim’s family and friends.
The incident is still under investigation, and aerial video from WXIA showed other riders being evacuated from the roller coaster. It’s a sobering reminder of the risks involved with theme park rides. I’m not sure what’s more shocking, the fact that someone died or that it took this long for something like this to happen. You can’t help but wonder what went wrong and how it could have been prevented.
It’s also worth noting that this incident comes nearly two weeks after Six Flags Magic Mountain in California announced that it would be permanently closing its world-famous ride X2. The decision was made after a CNN investigation exposed a long history of life-altering injuries and deaths linked to the roller coaster. I mean, who needs that kind of thrill when you can just stay on the ground and enjoy a nice, calm day? The X2 roller coaster had been the subject of allegations of injuries dating back over a decade, but it wasn’t until CNN’s investigation that the park finally decided to take action.
Six Flags Magic Mountain President Brian Oerding wrote in a blog post that the decision to close the ride was made because it’s “the right thing to do.” He also stated that ride safety is a cornerstone of their business and that they take guest confidence seriously. I suppose it’s better late than never, but it’s still a shame that it took so long for them to take action. Allegations of injuries on the X2 roller coaster had been largely kept under wraps until CNN’s investigation revealed over a dozen reports of serious injuries and hospitalizations associated with the ride, including at least two deaths.
As I finish reading this article, I have to say that it’s a sad reminder of the risks we take when we engage in thrill-seeking activities. My thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim, and I hope that this incident will lead to increased safety measures at theme parks across the country. And on a lighter note, I’m just glad I wasn’t on that roller coaster when it happened – I don’t think my coffee could have handled the shock.
