Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is trying to get trade talks started again with the US, but he’s not happy about the Americans’ behavior. He says they need to stop “trolling” and be serious about having discussions. I guess that’s one way to put it. It seems like the US is more interested in throwing shade and making memes than actually talking about trade.
I mean, come on, the White House posted an image of a bald eagle holding down a Canada goose. That’s just childish. And then there’s Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy saying Canada doesn’t have a military. Bless their hearts. Canadians have fought and died alongside American allies in multiple wars. You can’t just erase that.
And let’s not forget about Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent trying to land a joke about Canada’s submarines. It was a pretty weak attempt, if you ask me. He said something about Canada’s two submarines from the Edmonton Mall, but it turns out there used to be a submarine attraction at a mall in Edmonton. Oh, burn. I’m sure the Canadians are just devastated.
But you know who the real star of the show is? Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. He’s been posting workout videos and trying to troll the Canadian military. He even posted a photo of two women in Canadian military uniforms with a Canadian flag emoji and said “(this is real).” I’m not sure what he’s trying to prove, but it’s not very becoming.
It’s just amazing to me that these guys have the time to troll Canada when they have so many other things they should be focusing on. Hegseth has a war to win, Bessent has a bond market to worry about, and Duffy has gas prices to deal with. But no, they’d rather spend their time making fun of Canada.
In the end, it seems like all this trolling hasn’t done much to help the US in the trade war. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found that a majority of Americans oppose both renaming Lake Ontario and the imposition of tariffs on Canada. So, maybe it’s time for the US to stop trying to be funny and start being serious about trade talks. After all, as Carney said, “It’s not constructive. But that’s their democracy.” And that’s just the way the cookie crumbles, folks.
