Witness the Unholy Alliance: Joey Belladonna of Anthrax Abandons Ship to Sing Journey’s ‘Separate Ways’ with DAUGHTRY in the Heart of Syracuse

Joey Belladonna

OMG! 😱😱😱 Did you hear? ANTHRAX’s (yes, THAT Anthrax, the thrash metal gods…or whatever) singer Joey Belladonna, bless his heart, decided to grace the stage with DAUGHTRY (who are they again?) on Friday, July 11, at the Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheater At Lakeview in Syracuse, New York (sounds thrilling 🙄). They butchered JOURNEY’s classic “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)”. Fan-filmed video of this train wreck is below. Prepare your ears! 🙉

Like, two hours later (because who cares, right?), Joey, in his infinite wisdom, posted on social media: “Had an awesome time tonight! Huge thanks to DAUGHTRY for letting me join in and perform one of my favorite songs with you!” Oh, honey, no. Just no. We all know you’re just trying to stay relevant. 😴

So, get this, back in April 2023, DAUGHTRY actually released a music video for their “cover” of “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” featuring Lzzy Hale from HALESTORM. I’m sure JOURNEY is just *thrilled*. 💀

Apparently, Chris Daughtry had a “vision” after watching “Stranger Things”. He said, “I’ve always loved the song and I was wanting to do a classic cover and my wife and I were watching the ‘Stranger Things’ season finale and there’s this incredibly intense scene and ‘Separate Ways’ was a big part of this scene. It was so moving just the way it was used, it felt so cool and epic and I was immediately like ‘THIS is the one! We have to cover this song.'” Oh, the inspiration! The artistic depth! I’m weeping. 😭 NOT!

And the plot thickens! In 2023, Belladonna, who is also in a JOURNEY tribute band called BEYOND FRONTIERS (because apparently, he’s got nothing better to do), was asked if he was serious about wanting to sing with JOURNEY. He said, “I’ve been around [the JOURNEY] guys… I’m so far into knowing the whole band and crew that I always would have loved to have done that. ‘Cause I just like the music.” Oh, Joey, we believe you. You like the music so much you have to perform it in every band you’re in. Desperate much? 🙄

Joey also mentioned that BEYOND FRONTIERS is working on “studio versions” of their “whole set.” Oh joy! More JOURNEY covers from the guy who used to front ANTHRAX. My head hurts. 🤕

Then, in September 2023, Belladonna was asked what he’d say if JOURNEY asked him to be their singer. He replied, “You know, I would definitely be really interested in doing that. That would be great. Not that I think that that’s gonna happen, but, yeah, it would be great. I’d love that challenge.” Translation: “Please, JOURNEY, notice me! I’ll do anything!” 🥺

When asked about the JOURNEY tribute band, Belladonna whined, “Well, I’ve *been* singing JOURNEY stuff throughout the years, but never had a band that I thought that would be, you know, willing to do it correctly… I’ve always liked the music so much.” Yeah, we get it, Joey. You like JOURNEY. You’ve mentioned it, like, a million times. 😩

Belladonna‘s JOURNEY tribute band also features some other guys you’ve probably never heard of. Bless their hearts, too. 🙏

In an April 2020 interview, Belladonna said about singing Steve Perry‘s stuff: “I didn’t wanna copy it note for note. Sometimes I just like to do my own thing with it…I love to mess around with things.” Oh, we’ve noticed, Joey. We’ve noticed. 🤦‍♂️

Belladonna‘s JOURNEY tribute band debuted in March 2020. The world hasn’t been the same since. 🤪

In a 2005 interview, Belladonna claimed he sang a JOURNEY song during his ANTHRAX audition. He said, “I hit the mic and belted out some JOURNEY… I think it was [the song] ‘Lights’. I didn’t know what the hell I was getting into in the first place.” Well, Joey, you’re still singing JOURNEY, so maybe you still don’t know what you’re getting into. 🤷‍♂️

And to top it all off, ANTHRAX actually covered JOURNEY‘s “Keep On Runnin'” on their “Anthems” EP. I can’t even. 🤯 Is nothing sacred?
