President Donald Trump secretly switched planes before departing Turkey last month due to a security threat from Iran, and the whole story is just a big ol’ mess. The news, which was broken by the Washington Post and later confirmed by CNN, raises some very real issues and questions. I mean, it’s not every day you hear about a president using a decoy plane to avoid a potential threat. Bless their hearts, the White House thought they could keep this under wraps, but it’s just not that easy.
The basics of the story are pretty wild. Trump boarded the legacy plane, then was secretly transferred via a catering truck to a smaller Air Force C-32A. He flew that to the UK, where he kept up the ruse by covertly re-boarding the old Air Force One, deplaning for cameras, and then getting on the Qatari-gifted plane for the return flight home. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. It’s like something out of a bad spy movie.
Now, I’m not saying it’s not legitimate to take measures to protect the president, but the fact that Trump and the White House kept lying about it even after the apparent danger had passed is just ridiculous. I mean, come on, guys, you can’t just keep pretending like everything is fine when it’s not. Then-President Bill Clinton used a decoy plane for a trip to Pakistan in 2000, but at least he had the decency to disclose the ruse to the public after the fact.
The plan used reporters and staff as decoys, which is just insane. I mean, what if something had happened to them? The questions are: Was there any alternative to that, such as allowing everyone else to fly out on other airplanes? Why were reporters not informed? And lastly, what precautions were taken to protect the legacy plane? Former Secret Service agent Robert McDonald said on CNN’s “The Story Is with Elex Michaelson” that there’s going to be questions now with respect to what security was provided for each of the other two 747s, where people were still flying on that plane representing the United States press, White House staff.
This whole story also undercuts Trump’s claims of Iran’s weakness, which is just embarrassing. Trump has said that Iran’s military capabilities have been decimated, but the fact that they were able to pose a credible threat to Air Force One says otherwise. Former Obama White House adviser David Axelrod said on CNN’s “The Source with Kaitlan Collins” that if they needed to take such extraordinary steps to protect the president because the threat level was so high, the American people deserved to know that the threat level was that high in this particular case.
The story also prompts more questions about Air Force One and the controversial reporter subpoenas. There were already valid questions about the initial decision to not let Trump fly his Qatari-gifted plane back from Turkey. If the plane wasn’t as safe as the legacy plane, why was Trump flying it at all, particularly in foreign airspace? It suggested Trump’s desire to get the coveted new plane in the air might have led to cut corners.
In conclusion, this whole story is just a big mess, and it’s clear that the White House is trying to cover something up. I mean, who uses a decoy plane and then lies about it? It’s just not how you handle national security, folks. And let’s be real, if Trump didn’t want to admit that Iran had the capabilities to pose a threat to Air Force One, maybe he should have just been honest about it instead of trying to cover it up.
