Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. An American scholar, Min Zin, has been detained in China since early June, and his brother, Aung Maw Zin, is relieved that the US government has declared him wrongfully detained. I mean, who wouldn’t be? The Chinese government is accusing Min Zin of spying and endangering national security, which sounds like a pretty serious charge. But his brother says that’s just not true, and that Min Zin’s research has been focused on Myanmar, not China.
Now, I’m no expert, but it seems like the US government is trying to put some pressure on China to release Min Zin. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the wrongful detention determination, which is a big deal. And with Chinese President Xi Jinping set to meet with President Trump next month, maybe this will be a topic of discussion. You can bet that the US will be pushing for Min Zin’s release, and hopefully, it’ll happen sooner rather than later.
Aung Maw Zin is pretty emotional about the whole thing, and who can blame him? His brother is being held in solitary confinement, and he hasn’t been able to speak with him in over two months. That’s tough on any family. But Aung Maw Zin is staying positive, saying that the US government’s designation of Min Zin as wrongfully detained gives him hope that his brother will be released soon.
It’s interesting to note that Min Zin is now one of two Americans designated as wrongfully detained in China, along with Youlin Chen, a seismologist who’s been detained since 2024. The State Department is saying all the right things, of course – that the safety and security of US citizens is their top priority, and that they’ll keep advocating for Min Zin’s release.
I have to say, it’s nice to see the US government taking a strong stance on this. Maybe, just maybe, it’ll make a difference. Somewhere in Beijing, someone might be thinking twice about holding onto Min Zin. Anyway, I’m rooting for the guy, and I hope he gets to come home to his family soon.
The whole situation is a bit of a mess, but it’s good to see that the US is taking action. And who knows, maybe this will all get resolved at the upcoming meeting between President Trump and President Xi. I’ll be keeping an eye on it, that’s for sure. In the meantime, I’m sending positive vibes to Min Zin and his family – hopefully, they’ll be reunited soon, and this whole ordeal will be behind them. Bless their hearts, they’ve been through enough already.
