Karmelo Anthony Not Getting Do-Over In Murder Case

I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the Karmelo Anthony case, and folks, this is quite the story. A Texas judge denied a new trial for Karmelo Anthony on Saturday in the stabbing death of a 17-year-old athlete at a high school track meet. I mean, this case has been all over the news, and I’m not surprised it’s still making headlines. The killing drew national attention and led to harassment of the families, which is just terrible. Anthony, 19, was convicted of murder in June and sentenced to 35 years in prison for the April 2025 killing of Austin Metcalf, 17. That’s a long time to be behind bars, if you ask me.

The judge, Michael Chitty, denied the retrial motion in a half-page order following a two-day hearing near Dallas, citing a review of the evidence and arguments. He didn’t elaborate, which is probably for the best, given the sensitivity of the case. Russell Wilson, Anthony’s attorney, said the defense would appeal, which doesn’t surprise me one bit. These lawyers are paid to fight for their clients, after all.

The prosecutor, Bill Wirskye, defended the trial as fair, and Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said the jury’s guilty verdict stands. He also expressed his thoughts and prayers to the Metcalf family, which is a nice gesture, I suppose. Anthony’s attorneys demanded a retrial because they said the trial judge’s courtroom rules were too strict, limiting public access to the proceedings. They also didn’t like that the judge gave a post-trial interview saying the jury “got it right.” I can see why they’d be upset, but it’s not like the judge was being biased or anything.

The case got a lot of attention because of social media posts that made it seem like a racial thing, but lawyers on both sides told jurors that it had nothing to do with race. Anthony is Black, and Metcalf was white, but I guess that’s just a coincidence. The jurors rejected Anthony’s claims that he was defending himself during a confrontation with Metcalf in the bleachers of the track meet. I don’t know what really happened, but it’s clear that the jury didn’t buy Anthony’s story.

Somewhere in Texas, there’s a family still grieving the loss of their loved one, and that’s what really matters here. The rest is just lawyers and judges doing their thing. I’m not saying it’s not important, but let’s keep things in perspective. In the end, Karmelo Anthony is going to have to live with the consequences of his actions, and that’s a pretty heavy burden to carry. As I finish my coffee, I’m left thinking that this case is a reminder that life can be pretty unpredictable, and sometimes things don’t go as planned. And that’s a pretty sobering thought, if you ask me.
