Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about President Trump’s latest remarks, and I have to say, this one is a doozy. Apparently, he claimed that the Iranian nuclear facilities the US attacked last year were also “drug factories.” I mean, I’ve heard of multitasking, but this is taking it to a whole new level. Trump made these comments at a rally in Oklahoma, and I can only imagine the looks on the faces of the experts on Iran’s nuclear program who were listening to him. Bless their hearts, they must have been thinking, “What is going on here?”
I’m reading through the article, and it seems like Trump’s comments were met with bewilderment by just about everyone. James Acton, co-director of the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said, “Wow…That one is new to me.” I think that’s a nice way of saying, “Huh?” Acton also pointed out that the Fordow facility, which Trump was talking about, was not being used for drug production, and he hadn’t heard any allegations to that effect before.
Now, I’m trying to figure out what might have led Trump to make these comments. The article suggests that he might have gotten his wires crossed after talking about his efforts to combat illegal drug trafficking in the Caribbean. Maybe he just got carried away with the whole “drug” thing and forgot what he was actually talking about. Who knows? The White House isn’t offering any explanations, and Trump himself isn’t backing down, because, well, that’s just not what he does.
The thing is, even if Trump had meant to talk about the production of lawful drugs, like radiopharmaceuticals, which are used to diagnose and treat medical conditions, he still would have been inaccurate. The Fordow facility is an enrichment center, not a reactor, so it’s not like they’re producing any kind of drugs there. Acton says it’s more plausible that Trump just made a mistake, and I think that’s the kindest possible defense of his remarks.
As I’m reading through this article, I’m struck by the fact that Trump’s team isn’t even trying to explain or defend his comments. They’re just saying, “Refer to POTUS’ comments,” which is basically code for, “We’re not touching this one.” I guess when you’re used to declaring that “President Trump is right” even when he’s wrong, it’s hard to know what to do when he says something that’s just plain weird.
In conclusion, it seems like Trump’s “drug factories” remarks are just another example of him speaking off the cuff and getting himself into trouble. I’m not sure what’s more surprising, the fact that he said it or the fact that his team isn’t trying to spin it. Either way, it’s been an entertaining morning, and I’m glad I got to enjoy it with my coffee. And who knows, maybe someday we’ll get a straight answer out of Trump, but until then, I’ll just keep on sipping my coffee and shaking my head. 😊
