Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one – a vehicle drove onto a field during a soccer game at a sports complex in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday, and it’s just a mess. Authorities said two people were killed and multiple others were injured, which is just terrible. I mean, can you imagine being at a soccer game with your family and having a car just drive onto the field? It’s like something out of a nightmare.
I’m reading this on CNN, and they’re saying the driver of the vehicle is in custody, so at least there’s no ongoing threat to the public. But still, it’s just devastating – a child and an adult were killed, and they haven’t even released their names yet. Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department said they’re working to notify the family members, which is just a tough job to have to do.
So, apparently, there were two “juveniles” inside the vehicle when it drove through the Stryker Sports Complex around 3:25 p.m. local time. I’m not sure what to make of that – were they involved in the driving, or were they just along for the ride? The vehicle stayed at the scene, which is good, I guess. I mean, it’s not like it’s going to make a difference at this point, but still.
Witnesses told CNN affiliate KWCH that there were a lot of families and children on the field when it happened, which just makes it even more tragic. One attendee said he was with his family when a black pickup truck jumped the curb and drove onto the field. Two witnesses also described hearing a loud noise at the time, which I can only imagine was just terrifying.
The incident drew a big law enforcement presence to the scene, with dozens of local and county police vehicles showing up. I’m sure it was just chaos – I mean, can you blame them? The police are still investigating, and they’re not releasing the ages of the victims yet. They’re also not saying what soccer clubs were on the field, which is probably a good thing – I’m sure those families have enough to deal with right now.
The police are expected to hold another news conference to provide more information Saturday evening, which I’m sure will be just a tough thing to watch. I mean, it’s not like they’re going to have any good news to share. This is just a developing story, and it’s going to be updated as more information comes out.
In conclusion, this is just a terrible story all around – two people killed, multiple injured, and a whole lot of families affected. It’s just a reminder that you never know what’s going to happen, and you should always appreciate the time you have with your loved ones. And on a lighter note, I’m just glad I wasn’t at that soccer game – I don’t think my coffee could have handled it.
